Weather
Jenny Offill
Literary Fiction
Jenny Offill's Weather is a perfect encapsulation of not only a certain time and place, but also a mood. Enmeshed are our lives, emotions, and events in an age where information comes to us by the moment, in little bites. It would only be natural, then, to advance a thread with loosely related snippets from our protagonist's life. Here, we're snickering at the banalities of a guided meditation, later we are offered an answer to the question 'Do angels need sleep?'. Answer: It is unlikely, but impossible to be sure. The everywoman narrator, Lizzie - mother, sister, wife, librarian, and assistant to a well known intellectual and hostess of a podcast concerning the forthcoming climate apocalypse - is in the daily limbo in which many of us find ourselves unmoored. She is as preoccupied with a potential dentist appointment as she is the end of the world. I can relate.
